I’ve gained a real appreciation for the type of detail that's possible with cheap ballpoint pens. One drawback is that there's little margin for error with ink: misplaced stokes can't easily be hidden. By spacing lines in different ways, and varying the pressure on your pen, you can achieve all kinds of textures and gradients to show light and dark areas. At the same time, I think it's important to be able to decide when excatly is the right time to stop adding ink to the page, in order to preserve some kind of simplicity.
